E-Bike Safety

Ride safe. Respect the road. Wear your lid.

We love that your kids are riding to school, but e-bikes and electric scooters are faster and heavier than regular bikes. To keep them safe, here are the rules they must follow:

  1. The Golden Rule: HELMETS ARE NOT OPTIONAL
In Florida, if you are under the age of 16, the law says you MUST wear a fitted helmet. This goes for all bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters.
  2. Sidewalks are for Walking
You can ride on the sidewalk, but:
    • Slow Down: You must yield to pedestrians
    • Give a Shout: Say "On your left!" or ring a bell before passing someone
    • Speed Limit: Treat the sidewalk like a slow zone. If it’s crowded, move to the bike lane.
(Effective July 1, 2026, you cannot ride more than 10 miles an hour on a sidewalk if a pedestrian is within 50 feet)
  3. Don't Get Your Bike Towed
    • No Pedals = No E-Bike: If your "bike" doesn't have pedals you can actually use, it might be an "e-moto." Those are illegal for anyone without a driver's license and registration.
    • No Modding: If you "unlock" your bike to go over 28 mph, it’s no longer an e-bike—it’s an illegal motor vehicle.
  4. Quick Safety Check
    • Lights: If you ride before sunrise or after sunset, you need a front white light and a red rear light/reflector.
    • Earbuds: You can only wear ONE earbud. You need the other ear to hear cars and sirens.
    • Stop Signs: You are a vehicle. You must stop at red lights and stop signs just like a car.
