Message from Mayor Wasserman: Amendment 3
Florida voters have approved Amendment 3, bringing changes to property taxes that will impact both homeowners and local governments across our state, including Coconut Creek. While these changes are intended to provide financial relief to property owners, they will also affect the funding cities rely on to deliver essential services beginning in 2027/2028.
Fortunately, Coconut Creek did not wait until after the election to begin preparing. Earlier this year, during our strategic planning workshop, the City Commission and staff developed a three-phase approach to prepare for potential changes in property tax revenue. We have already begun taking proactive steps, including carefully evaluating vacant positions before filling them, reducing discretionary spending, and postponing certain capital projects. We are also continuing to pursue grants and alternative funding sources to help minimize the financial impact on our residents.
With Amendment 3 now approved, our work becomes even more important. Over the next year, the City Commission will hold additional workshops to evaluate our financial outlook, establish priorities, and determine how best to protect the services and programs our residents value most. Difficult decisions may lie ahead, but every decision must be made with careful consideration of its impact on our community.
Throughout this process, we will remain transparent, encourage community input, and keep residents informed. While the financial landscape may be changing, our commitment to you will not. We will continue working to protect essential services, maintain a financially responsible City, and preserve the high quality of life that makes Coconut Creek such a special place to call home.
