Curbside Recycling Returns to Creek
Coconut Creek City Commission Unanimously Approves Curbside Recycling Program
During their June 11th meeting, the Coconut Creek City Commission unanimously approved a curbside recycling program that will launch in October 2026. This initiative stems from a deep commitment to addressing the global garbage crisis and doing what is best for the overall community and environment.
“This agreement is an investment in Coconut Creek’s future, delivering environmental benefits, long-term value for residents, and expanded education opportunities that will help build a cleaner, greener community for generations to come,” said Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman.
Currently, single-family homeowners pay approximately $326 per year for residential solid waste collection and disposal services. Due to rising operational, labor, fuel, equipment, and disposal costs over the past five years, the annual cost of waste services is projected to increase to approximately $398.95 per year under the new collection contract, even without the addition of recycling services. By reintroducing curbside recycling and incorporating advanced AI-assisted recycling collection technology, the total cost is expected to increase by an additional $7.86 per month.
Over the course of the five-year contract, increased recycling is expected to reduce landfill disposal costs, helping to lessen future increases in residential garbage collection rates and possibly lowering the overall cost of recycling over time.
This new initiative will be part of the Republic Services solid waste and recycling collection contract. The contract provides curbside garbage, recycling, bulk, and yard trash collection for single-family properties; garbage, bulk, and recycling collection for multi-family properties; and garbage collection for commercial properties.
As part of a targeted education approach, the City will focus on reducing contamination and ensuring residents recycle correctly. AI-powered trucks will help monitor recycling streams and provide valuable data to improve participation and reduce contamination.
Republic Services will partner with Coastal Waste Recycling and the City on an education campaign to support sustainability goals while helping maximize the program’s effectiveness.
The City will actively track results, and long-term savings will be realized if the community disposes of less solid waste and recycles more. By diverting materials from landfills, the program supports Coconut Creek’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Additional information about the program, including educational outreach efforts and implementation details, will be shared with residents in advance of the October 2026 launch.
