Landscape Maintenance

Zebra Longwing Butterfly
Regular landscape maintenance keeps your yard looking its best while also protecting our environment. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and control weeds, sod provides a lush and durable groundcover, and maintaining your irrigation system conserves water and ensures plants get the right amount of care. By keeping up with these practices, residents can enhance curb appeal, support property values, and contribute to Coconut Creek’s signature hometown feel.
Mulch Trunk Flare

Mulching

A 2-inch layer of mulch is required to be maintained in all required landscaping areas. Eucalyptus and Melaleuca mulch are recommended as a sustainable option. Each tree and palm should have a 2-foot ring of organic mulch around them. There should be a 4-inch gap adjacent to the base of the trunk. Mulch should also have a gap from the base of shrubs and ground cover. Plastic sheeting and other impervious materials are not permitted to be used under mulched areas.

Avoid creating mulch volcanoes. Cypress mulch is not permitted.

Tree Care Sod

Sod

Sod (grass/turf) is required to be planted in all areas not covered by other landscaping, structures, driveway, walkways, etc. Ground cover plants may be used in lieu of sod so long as it provides full coverage within 6 months of planting. Alternative drought resistant sod, such as Bahia may be used with approval from the City. Decorative rocks, pebbles, stone, gravel, or other similar material, etc., shall only be used to accent organic landscape material and shall not cover more than 10% of any open space yard area.

Tree Care Irrigation

Irrigation

Irrigation systems are designed to have 100% coverage with a minimum of 50% overlap. Low-water demand zones should be installed separately from high-water demand zones. Rotary irrigation heads must be on separate zones from spray/mist heads because of different precipitation rates. Broward County has year-round water restrictions. Lawns may only be watered before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM and can only irrigate for 2 days a week, depending on address numbers.

Landscaping-Hedge
