The Dr. Sanjay Gupta Scam making its first known appearance here in Coconut Creek is the basis for this Coconut Creek Police Department Scam Alert. Dr. Gupta, a brain surgeon and medical commentator on CNN, first warned of an AI-generated scam involving his name, voice, and likeness during an appearance on the network back in July.

The scammers are using his image and AI-generated audio and video, including some of Dr. Gupta's own voice, to sell phony health cures and fake products.

An 80-year-old woman fell for the scam recently after one of the fraudsters called her on the phone. She not only sent them money, but she also gave them plenty of information they can use to steal her identity.

The scammers are using more and more of these AI-generated deep fakes to fool people into thinking they're hearing, and seeing, the real person on the phone or in the endorsement videos.

The best scam prevention tool to use in these cases is to remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. If you get a phone call or text from anyone claiming to have the answers to all of your problems, it's a scam.

Just ignore it.
