Water and Sewer Rates

How To Calculate Your Bill
The City of Coconut Creek does not have its own water and wastewater treatment facilities. Instead, we contract with Broward County to purchase water at a reduced sale-for-resale rate and for the transmission and treatment of the wastewater. The City is responsible for installing, maintaining, and upgrading the water and wastewater infrastructure within our service area, including pipeline and water storage tanks that transport water and wastewater to and from the County's system.
Water and sewer rates are set to recover the full cost of providing service, which includes:
- The fees charged by Broward County for water supply, wastewater transmission, and treatment.
- The City's capital costs for maintaining and improving water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Ongoing operational expenses necessary to ensure reliable service.
Since Broward County adjusts its fees annually based on its operational costs, capital investments, and regulatory requirements, the City must also review and adjust its rates accordingly. To ensure financial stability and continued investment in critical infrastructure, rate adjustments are determined based on the greater of the following:
- 2.5%
- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), or
- Broward County's adjustments to water and wastewater services fees.
This approach ensures that the City can continue to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective water and wastewater services to the community.
Each year, the City reviews the financial status of the Water and Wastewater Fund to determine whether the full rate increase mentioned above is necessary. In some cases, the City has been able to forgo or reduce the approved rate increase. The City remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the water and wastewater system while balancing service costs with the needs of the community.
Rate Structure & Fees
The City of Coconut Creek follows a tiered rate structure to encourage water conservation—residents who use less water pay a lower rate per gallon.
- The tiered structure is designed to promote responsible water use
- For single-family homes, there is no additional sewer charge for water consumption exceeding 10,000 gallons per month
- The City does not impose late fees or interest charges; therefore, timely payments are essential to avoid service disruptions
- For properties outside the City's corporate limits: As of February 1, 2019, customers receiving water and sewer services are subject to a 15% surcharge in accordance with Florida Statutes 180.191. However, these customers are exempt from the 8% utility tax
