The Bank Card Courier Scam is the basis for our latest Coconut Creek Police Department Scam Alert.
It happened to an 81-year-old woman recently. She got a call from a scammer pretending to work for her bank. The scammer told her that her bank card was “compromised.” To help her out, the scammer said she would send someone to her place, in-person, to pick up the supposed compromised card and give her a new one.
Sure enough, another scammer, perhaps the same person on the phone, knocked on her front door and took the card. The fraudster assured her she’d be back soon with a new card. Of course, she never came back. The con artist then proceeded to try and drain the victim’s bank account dry.
Luckily, with the help of her daughter, she caught it in time before the transactions went through.
It’s important to remember that no one from your bank would ever call you out of the blue and tell you that there is something wrong with your bank card. Your bank would also never send someone to your front door to pick it up.
If you ever get a similar phone call, just hang up.
